I literally live and breathe animals from the tiny little Mousy that ate from my hand in our kitchen for 14 months... to CW the coyote, who has accepted my alms in the form of food for herself and her pups.I couldn't exist without my dogs who have shared my life for many years now. Although I struggle to make ends meet with my teaching and art work, my paintings of their horses are occasionally purchased by people such as Jessica Steinbrenner. She bought the painting I did of their Majestic Warrior as a present for her father George Steinbrenner. It was subsequently hung up in his bedroom. Barbara Banke bought the painting I did of their Curlin for her husband Jess Jackson.Other prominent horse people who have purchased work include Hall of Fame trainers H Allen Jerkens and Jonathan Sheppard as well as Mrs John (Donna) Ward. Owners include Janice McNair,Barry Schwartz, and John and Debby Oxley. Some of the outstanding horses I've painted are Rachel Alexandra,Beautiful Pleasure,Careless Jewel, and Sky Mesa.
My childrens' book " Awesome Elijah",the true story of a rescued calf that grew up to be ridden at a horse Expo at the Saratoga Race Course is available on Amazon.com.
A book about the remarkable life of Cody coyote is in the works.I have a song I sing about Cody as well as a song about Elijah and one about the rat who came to dinner. If I can raise between about $300.00 and $400.00 I'd like to get a simple cd recording of me playing the guitar and singing the songs. The cd then could go out with the stories to publishers.
I guess doing portraits comes naturally, as my grandfather Henry Raleigh, is in the Illustrators Hall of Fame for his work. He also illustrated quite a few World War 1 posters for which he was thanked by President Herbert Hoover. My mother, Sheila Raleigh, was an artist and close friend of famous African-American artist Romare Bearden. They mixed paints together, and I have the caricature she did of him. My mother and father movie critic Archer Winsten and their friends black artists Jacob Lawrence and Charles Alston were part of the Harlem Cultural scene.
My father movie critic Archer Winsten would give them movie passes and they would go view movies together. They were all part of the Harlem cultural scene along with their friends Jacob Lawrence and John Hammond. My mother did a portrait of director Robert Rossen's daughter Ellen.Over the years she did numerous portraits.
